With our first Channel Mixer layer selected, do a CTRL-A to Select all and then go to Edit and do a 'Copy Merged'. This is important, don't do a Copy, do a Copy Merged.

Go to the 'Channels' tab and click on the make new channel box at the bottom of the pallette as shown. A new 'Alpha 1' channel will be created. Do a CTRL-V to past the merged layers from the previous step to past them on the new channel.

With the new Alpha 1 channel selected, go to Image-Adjustments-Levels

Adjust the black slider (left one) and the white slider (right one) closer and closer to the center until you achieve maximum contrast. Our goal is to create a 2 color, black and white image. You're not going to get that in this step, but get as close as you can without blowing out the details in the hair.

Once you're satisfied with the levels, go back to the Layers pallette, select the other channel mixer layer, do a CTRL-A and a 'Copy Merged' command.

Go to the Channels pallette again, create a new channel by clicking on the box at the bottom of the pallette and past the merged layers onto Alpha 2.
